Revolutionary light passenger airplane "787 dreamliner" by company "Boeing" completed its first test flight on December 15th, after the delay of two-and-a-half years following a series of hitches, including design problems.

"Dreamliner" is the largest passenger airplane made of composite materials and it should reduce fuel consumption as well as save on maintenance costs. The aircraft is made of carbon and titanium, which makes the plane nimble and able to fly long distances without refuelling.

Blue-and-white jet lifted off from the airfield in the vicinity of the factory where it was assembled, about 45 km north of Seattle. The plan was that the flight over the state of Washington lasts for 4 hours.

"Dreamliner" has attracted some 840 orders worth about 140 billion USD from all over the globe, although some have been cancelled because of the delays. Analysts remind that the first test flight is only one step towards the final goal, and not the sign that the whole work is done.

"Boeing" claims it will start delivering new airplanes to the buyers by the end of 2010, and experts are of the opinion that it is an optimistic estimate.

Its arch-rival, "Airbus", also has a lightweight craft in development. Its "A350" plane will also be made primarily from carbon-composite materials.
