Milisavljevic winery – The quality of wine is in the vineyard, and gold medals prove it
In Novi Sad, the jury was won over by three wines – a new one, Spev, a combination of Merlot and green walnut, Misterija 5 Chardonnay and Telecka Zusot (Sauvignon Blanc, yellow Muscat, Gewurz), whereas Telecka Zweigelt won the contest in Subotica.
– The quality of wine is largely determined at the vineyard, that is, it depends on the quality of the grapes, which in turn depends on many factors, primarily on the structure of the soil it is produced on, the number of sunny days and other factors. The Telecka plateau, where our grapes and wines are produced, has been known since the time of Maria Theresa, that is, since the 18th century, as God-given for the production of top quality grapes and wines – the owner of the winery, Stevan Milisavljevic, says for eKapija.
He explains that the two uppermost dark humus layers are very loose, letting in water very easily, which carries all the mineral matters with it and deposits them in the third, moist yellow layer.
– This is an ideal bed for grapevine, which is prone to developing a strong root, and once it does, it absorbs minerals aromatic compounds and tannins from the moist yellow layer, after which they mature in the grape, allowing for a balance between sugars and wine acids. Through a technological procedure, these healthy grapes are turned into top quality dry wine, which has a pronounced character, fullness, aroma and color, softness, without rough tannins.
The Milisavljevic family chose to produce wine in the Telecka area precisely because of the quality of the soil and the number of sunny days, as well as because of the constant breeze in this location. The production is intensive, both in terms of the hiring of workforce and the profit.
– Our vineyard takes up 10 hectares and features around 50,000 vines, half of which are of white varieties: Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurz, Yellow Muscat. Another half are red varieties: Merlot, Pinot Noir, Zweigelt, Game – Milisavljevic says.
He doesn't reveal the details of the production, because, as he says, it is a trade secret, but he does point out that they use a cooling plant and a closed system of grape processing.
– We aim for high quality grapes and wines. With our way of production, one vine makes for one bottle of wine, which means that we produce around 50,000 bottles a years – Milisavljevic says.
If you want to taste the wines coming from the Telecka plateau, you can head directly for Lipar, and they are also available at restaurants throughout Vojvodina and Belgrade, as well as in large store chains.
