Director-General for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Christian Danielsson said today at the Kopaonik Business Forum that fiscal consolidation in Serbia was impressive, but that the country should also work on the rule of law.

– The fiscal consolidation is impressive, the budget deficit has been transformed into a surplus and the public debt is being reduced. I am impressed, but a way should be found for reforms to be enhanced and for the gray economy to be reduced – Danielsson said.

He said that reforms were necessary in state companies, especially in the energy sector, and added that a good business environment should be secured for SMEs.

According to Danielsson, the energy sector is of key importance and Serbia should focus on it, because, when the economy starts to grow, so will the demand for energy.

– It will be very important to have a good energy sector – he said.

Danielsson says that digitization is crucial to development and expects it to go upwards, but adds that it is very important “for all players” on the road to the EU to have equal conditions.
