Zoran Ilic, assistant to the minister of construction, transport and infrastructure of Serbia, stated on Monday, January 14, that the Nis Constantine the Great Airport was of strategic importance for the state and that RSD 256 million had been invested in it since the takeover.

– Since the takeover of the Nis Airport, the state has put a total of RSD 256 million in it. Of this, RSD 70 million was redirected to the Aerodromi Srbije company for the deicing and ice protection of planes, which was necessary to secure the continuity of air traffic at the Constantine the Great Airport – Ilic said.

He added that an additional RSD 110 million had been secured and paid to the account of the Nis Airport and that another RSD 76 million had been secured for operations in 2019, the Ministry of Transport announced.

He said that the Constantine the Great Airport was of strategic importance for Serbia and that investments would be made in line with the planned projects and the traffic.

Ilic said that the state’s first task following the takeover had been to secure continuous and safe handling of planes and passengers.

He said that investments in the Nis Airport would continue and added that this was now the state’s responsibility, which should enable the City of Nis to focus on social, utility and other issues in the city.

– The plans for the construction of the control tower at the Constantine the Great Airport are at the final stage. The land is currently being secured, and EUR 5 million will be invested in the tower. We expect the construction to start in mid-2020 and to be completed by 2022 at the latest – Ilic said.

He said that the management of the Constantine the Great Airport was expected to prepare the technical documentation which would plan certain funds for the development and expansion of the passenger terminal.

According to him, investments in the Nis Airport are a part of the investments in infrastructure that the state is realizing in Nis.

– As part of the new cycle of investments in infrastructure, worth around EUR 5 million, big projects will be realized in Nis, primarily in road and rail transport. EUR 268 million has been secured for the project of the reconstruction, modernization and electrification of the Nis-Dimitrovgrad railway, which includes the construction of the bypass railway around Nis – Ilic said.
