There's a danger of swine fever, which has swept over Hungary and Romania, spreading to Serbia, but the state has taken all measures to prevent this, Minister of Agriculture Branislav Nedimovic said.

Nedimovic specified that Backa and Srem, where pig farms are the most numerous, were at the biggest risk.

– People can be calm, as the disease is not dangerous to them, but could be a problem for the economy of the country, as there's no cure for this disease – Nedimovic explained.

The minister reminded that the swine fever had first appeared in Hungary and that the fence put up to stop the refugees from coming in had prevented the spreading of the fever and stopped wild pigs from crossing over to Serbia and spreading the disease.

As for Romania, there is a part of the border that is open, making it a critical point, Nedimovic noted.

– We have founded a national center which deals with the problem of the swine fever and has been taking preventive measures for a year now – Nedimovic said and reminded that Serbia had banned the entrance of goods of animal origin from Hungary and Romania.

– Preventive measures are what's important here, so as to stop the entrance of any type of goods of the kind of origin that might indicate the presence of this disease – the minister noted and added that the disease was on the wane in Hungary, whereas, in Romania, it had been detected in several other location several days before.
