Serbian Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic and Mayor of Nis Darko Bulatovic today signed an agreement on the transfer of the founder's rights in the PE Nis Airport, whereby the state takes over the management of the airport.
– The Nis Airport is of strategic importance for Serbia as an alternative to the Belgrade Airport and a backup to the SMATSA system, thanks to the new flight control tower we will build in Nis. The transfer of the management to the Government of Serbia will enable the Nis Airport to operate regularly and secure funds for investments which will enable its further development so that it could continue being one of the leading airports in this part of the region – Mihajlovic said.
She reminded that the Government of Serbia had reached the decision on the trasfer of the founder's rights from the PE Nis Airport to the Republic of Serbia after years of pleas from the City of Nis and the airports management to aid its further operations and development, as the City of Nis, the owner didn't have enough funds its disposal, the Ministry of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure announced.
In the past four year, the state has aided the Nis Airport with a total of EUR 9.8 million, of which EUR 3.6 million in money and equipment given to the Constantine the Great Airport by aviation companies and institutions owned by the state, the press release says.
It adds that the number of passengers at the Nis Airport has increased 248 times in the past three years, from 1,335 in 2014 to 331,582 in 2017, whereas cargo transport has increased nine times, from 284 tons to 2,542 tons.
