The Belgrade subway is to be built in phases, and the beginning of the construction of the first line is planned for 2020. This is specified by the General Regulation Plan of Belgrade railway systems, adopted by a majority vote on June 26, at a session of the City Assembly, Beoinfo reports.

Our job is to start building the subway by 2020 and we will succeed, Deputy Mayor Goran Vesic said at the session.

According to him, the plan envisages two subway lines and four BG Voz lines, integrated into a single system.

– This means that we will connect Lazarevac and Mladenovac, expand BG Voz to Surcin and the airport. The expansion of the tram network to Zemun, Makisko Polje, through the city's center, is also planned, and the feasibility studies have already been prepared – Vesic announced.

He said that the first line had been estimated at EUR 1.3 billion, whereas both lines should be worth a total of over EUR 4 billion.

– We will finance it together with the Republic of Serbia, as it is a project of national importance – Vesic said.

Talking about the decision for the preparation of the General Regulation Plan of railway systems in Belgrade, with elements of detailed elaboration for the first phase of the first subway line, City Architect Milutin Folic said that the decision marked the beginning of the technical part of the realization of the subway project.

– The smart plan has been prepared. In line with the pre-feasibility study, being prepared in cooperation with France's Egis, we are now at a stage of the preparation of the decision, to be followed by the preparation of the plan which will enable the construction of the subway to begin in late 2020 – Folic emphasized.
