Budget spending for environmental protection needs to increase by around EUR 500 million a year, amounting to 1.2 to 1.4% of the gross domestic product, the Fiscal Council of Serbia believes.

As said at the FS conference “Investments in Environmental Protection: Social and Fiscal Priority”, an increase in budget spending for environmental protection would improve the budget structure, as public investments would grow, which would have a positive impact on the economic growth in the short term.

According to the Fiscal Council, a strong increase in investments in environmental protection should be the budget priority in 2019 and the following years.

At the moment, there's fiscal room in the budget, which can be used to solve this problem, and this is an opportunity that shouldn't be missed, the council's members believe.
