The new rulebook on the declaration, labeling and marketing of food came into effect on June 15, implementing plenty of new features which will enable consumers to be better informed when purchasing food and regulate responsibility in the food business in more detail.

Among other things, the subjects now oblige to state the energy value on the label, as well as the amount of fats, saturated fatty acids, carbohydrates, sugars, proteins and salts.

They will no longer be allowed to list sodium on nutritive declarations, but will need to state the salt content instead.

The food produced, packaged and declared before June 15, stored in warehouses of producers and stores, may be put in the market before the expiration date and no later than December 31, 2018.

Food produced after June 15 needs to be declared in line with the new regulations.

The rulebook also proscribes rules of the practice of honest information, that is, it defines that the provision of information about food must not deceive the end consumer, especially regarding the characteristics of the food, its nature, identity, properties, composition, amount, expiration date, the country of origin or the country and location of origin and the manner of production.
