The construction of a thermal power plant in Kragujevac, which interests the Chinese company CMEC, would be “a huge support to the industry in the upcoming 20 years”, said Mayor of Kragujevac Radomir Nikolic.

Nikolic said that CMEC wanted to produce electrical energy and heating energy, which would be “a huge investment, comparable, for example, to the Gruza Lake, the biggest infrastructural project in Kragujevac in the past 40 years”.

The thermal power plant would use natural gas for the production of 250 MW of electricity and 150 MW of hot water for the town's heating pipeline.

The entire Kragujevac consumes 150 MW of electricity, Nikolic said and added that the electricity from the future power plant would therefore be exported, in addition to being used in Serbia.

Nikolic, however, said that it was still early too talk about the realization of the project, because, in addition to Kragujevac, another candidate for the project is New Belgrade.

He reminded that CMEC had been interested in the construction of a meat packing plant in Kragujevac several years before, that a study had been prepared, but that everything stopped due to a disease of the cattle, which spread from the region to Serbia.
