Over 527 billion cigarettes were produced in the European Union in 2016, 36 billion fewer than in 2015 and around a third less than 10 years before, Eurostat announced on Thursday, May 31, 2018, on the occasion of the World No Tobacco Day.

That year, over 1,000 cigarettes were produced in EU countries per resident, that is, around 50 packs of 20 cigarettes. The total value amounted to around EUR 6.2 billion.

The majority of the cigarettes were produced in Germany, nearly 168 billion, that is, 32% of the total production in the EU. This means that each third cigarette made in the EU came from Germany.

The second spot belongs to Poland, with 96 billion cigarettes produced in 2016, that is, 19% of the production in the EU. It is followed by Romania, with 77 billion cigarettes produced, amounting to 15% of the total production.

The list further features Greece (31 billion), Portugal (27 billion) and Bulgaria (21 billion).

According to Eurostat, Serbia produced nearly 35 billion cigarettes in 2016.
