Start date of construction of high speed railway from Novi Sad to Subotica to be known soon – Trains to run at 200 kilometers per hour
The section from Belgrade to Novi Sad currently features a big construction site for the railway infrastructure which will enable trains to run at 200 km/h. The plan is for the works to also move north of the Danube, to Backa, and the negotiations about the price of construction of new railway infrastructure are in progress.
– We are having negotiations and should sign a contract for the section from Novi Sad to Subotica by the end of spring. All the details have been agreed, except for the price, as we need to agree on the amendment to the project related to train speed – says Imre Kern, State Secretary at the Ministry of Transport.
He clarifies that the old project documentation defined train speeds of 160 km/h, whereas the state has now reached the decision to have the railway built for the speed of 200 km/h.
– This means that the project for the high-speed railway will need to be upgraded and that's why we can't come out with a definite price – he adds.
The works on the modernization and reconstruction of the Belgrade-Budapest railway started late last year and will be carried out in three stages. The first stage covers the section from Belgrade to Stara Pazova, the second one started last week and covers the route through Fruska Gora to Novi Sad, and the beginning of the third and the longest one, from Novi Sad to Subotica, is not yet known.
The trilateral project of modernization of the Belgrade-Budapest railway is the first cross-border project within the cooperation between China and the CEE countries, realized by Serbia, Hungary and China. The total value of the construction of the railway in Serbia is around USD 2 billion.
