Deputy Minister and Culture and Information for the development of digital research infrastructure in culture and arts, Dejan Maslikovic, stated on Friday, March 16, 2018, that Serbia's cultural institutions were taking part in the Europeana project for the purpose of digitalization and preservation of cultural heritage.

As said on the Government of Serbia's website, Maslikovic told the press before the “Cultural Heritage in the Digital Era” panel discussion that cultural institutions on a local level would be supported in getting involved with the project.

He said that, for the time being, the National Library of Serbia and the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade took part in Europeana the most, and added that it would be good for institutions keeping local heritage collections, which are very important for defining the people's identity, to get involved as well.

Head of EU Delegation to Serbia, Sem Fabrizi, said that Serbia and the Western Balkans were a part of Europe and that they shared a common history and cultural heritage with the EU countries.

– It is therefore good that we've initiated a one-year cultural program with over 40 events together with the Government of Serbia – Fabrizi said and announced that Serbia would restore the Franciscan monastery in Bac and the Golubac fortress with the help of the EU.

Nienke van Schaverbeke, Head of Europeana Collections, explained that the program was the “digital face” of Europe's cultural heritage.
