Serbia and Malta to join forces in countering illegal employment – Protocol on cooperation to be signed soon

Serbia and Malta should sign a protocol on cooperation in the next 30 days in order to prevent illegal employment of Serbian citizens in the island-state and protect their rights.

Sanja Gavranovic of the Sector for Employment of the Ministry of Labor, says that a large number of Serbian citizens working in Malta are interested in having their rights regulated.

The official data for Malta from 2016 show that 1,380 citizens of Serbia worked in the country, but unofficial estimates say that between 35 and 40 thousand citizens of Serbia, B&H and Montenegro work in the country illegally, making up around 10% of the populace of Malta.

– In the upcoming period, we will be signing agreements and protocols to the end of securing protection of our citizens – Gavranovic says and notes that a protocol with the Russian Federation was being prepared and that there are already agreements on temporary employment with Belarus, B&H, Slovakia, whereas a memorandum of understanding has been signed with Hungary.

The data show that the number of workers being sent from Serbia through agencies to work abroad legally has doubled in a year.

Last year, around 7,000 citizens went to work abroad through those agencies, whereas the number amounted to 3,500 a year before.

Although a considerable number of Serbian citizens goes to work in Croatia and Germany each year, no agreement on temporary employment has yet been signed with these two countries.

A total of 279 citizens found a job in Germany, Slovenia and Croatia through the National Employment Service last year, primarily medical workers, cooks, waiters, tourism animators...
