The company Rudnik i flotacija Rudnik, on the eponymous mountain, popularly known as the roof of Sumadija, has had its exploitation life cycle extend by at least another six years thanks to the recently discovered reserves of 400,000 tons of ore. The year 2017, the thirteenth year since the company’s foundation, was marked by the breaking of as many as three records.

– The last year was a record-setting year in the amount of close to 300,000 tons of excavated ore. The previous record was made in 2015, with 287,000 tons excavated. Another important success are exploratory and preparatory works, on which the opening of new mining tiers depends. In April, we bought the new machinery which helped us detect new ore, and we invested a million and a half euros in this exploration – Director General Aco Ilic explains.

The new 400,000 tons of ore amounts to double the reserves discovered previously.

– The exploitation of the recently discovered ore will begin next January. We have a full year to approach this rich site, which is located around 80 meters below the bottom level of all the works done so far. It will be hard, but we will excavate this ore, which has exceeded the investments multiple times – Ilic continues.

The privatization of this company through the sale to the Belgrade-based company Contango in 2004 is considered one of the ten most successful privatizations in Serbia by all the competent state bodies. Before it took place, Rudnik was facing bankruptcy.

– There were 295 employees at the time, and now there are 452. Last year we employed 30 new workers. Seven workers joined the exploratory drilling unit, and, if we buy another machine set this year, we will hire another nine workers for the same position.

Mining rent

– Last year, the mining rent towards the state amounted to around RSD 80 million, and the municipality of Gornji Milanovac had returns of RSD 32 million. These funds are spent exclusively for infrastructural facilities in the local community. So far, they’ve been invested in the water supply network in Rudnik and on road construction – Ilic says.
