China will send a special probe to the dark side of the Moon, intending to grow plants in the South Pole – Aitken basin, science portals report.

The new space mission, Chang'e 4, will be launched in June, using the rocket Long March 4C, which will transport a 425-kg communication relay satellite and place it in the orbit 60,000 kilometers behind the Moon.

The second launch will send a lender and a rover to the far side of the Moon.

This will be the first landing on the dark side of the Moon on an unexplored region of the Moon called South Pole-Aitken Basin, a vast basin in the southern hemisphere of the far side which extends from the South Pole to Aitken crater.

The rover will also contain a 'gardening kit' to pave the way for a human outpost by examining how plants grow on the lunar surface. Along with plants, the rover will also be carrying insects, the Daily Mail reports.

– The Chinese are pushing back the frontier with such a technically challenging mission – says Brian Harvey, space analyst.
