The Clinical Center of Serbia got the Bone Marrow Transplant Center and the Sterile Unit on October 17, 2017.

Around 40 bone marrow transplants are performed annually in Serbia in patients suffering from malignant and autoimmune diseases. It is expected that the opening of the Center and the consequent improvement of conditions will lead to an increase in the number of transplants.

Around RSD 90 million was invested in the Center, and the CCS has thereby become the third health institution in Serbia to provide this type of intervention. Stem cell transplants in children are performed at the Institute for Mother and Child Health Care, whereas the same procedure in adults is performed at the Military-Medical Academy.

Taking a tour of the clinic's new Sterile Unit, Minister of Health Zlatibor Loncar pointed out that the Center had been built in line with the highest world standards and that the doctors from the Clinic for Hematology had gone through professional training in one of the biggest bone marrow transplant centers, the one in Hamburg.

The director of the CCS, Milika Asanin, reminded that the Clinic for Hematology was a reference center for diagnostics and treatment of hematology diseases, but that they hadn't been able to offer the transplant program up till then, due to inadequate conditions.

As he says, such interventions cost 150,000 to 300,000 euros abroad, and the CCS will now provide them at four to five times lower prices.

The director of the Clinic for Hematology, Biljana Mihaljevic, reminded that the center in Hamburg performed around 300 stem cell transplants a year, and that up to 40 allogeneic transplants were performed in Serbia, whereas Zagreb and Ljubljana performed 80 to 100.

– By opening the Sterile Unit, the Clinic for Hematology takes upon itself to perform 40 allogeneic transplants a year, bringing us up to the level of the centers in the region – Mihaljevic concluded.
