The European Union has decided to put a stop to double standards in the production of food for the east and the west markets. By the end of the year, unified standards for testing food products will be defined, and a million euros is available for those tests, stated European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Vera Jourova.

In her statement for Deutsche Welle, she said that the sale of two different products in the same packaging, one for the “rich” EU members, the other for the “poor” ones, deceived the consumers.

The president of the European Commission said in mid-September that this kind of practice would no longer be tolerated in the EU market. It was decided for the commission not to propose the new legislation for solving the problem, but to use all the existing regulations in order to put a stop to the discrimination of consumers.

No one has commented on the issue in Serbia yet, although it is known that there are such products in the local market as well. Goran Popovic, president of the National Consumers' Association of Serbia, says that consumers' organization do not have enough money to carry out parallel examinations.

– The last examination of around twenty products in 2011 showed that there were differences in quality. We pointed to this problem back then too. The state should get more involved so that Serbia could benefit from the initiative started by EU members.

The issue of consumer discrimination was first initiated by Slovakia, and one of the most thorough examinations was carried out in Croatia, when it was determined that around 60% of the tested products were more expensive in Croatia than in Germany, whereas only 4 of the 26 tested products showed no difference in either the price or the quality.
