Montenegro to install 45,000 smart meters by 2019 – EBRD to credit job worth EUR 32 million
A total of 14,800 meters will be replaced in the central region, whereas, the number of meters to be replaced in the seaside and the northern regions is 18,000 and 12,000 respectively, CEDIS reported. The new meters enable automated, simpler a quicker measuring of the consumption.
The project was initiated in December 2011, and 250,000 meters have been installed since then, by which around 70% of the users of the power distribution system have been included in the remote measuring system. The project also entails the reconstruction of the network and the equipment.
CEDIS says that this has considerably improved the quality and the safety of the power supply, while reducing power losses in the network.
The third phase of the project is also financed from the credit of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) of EUR 32 million.
The replacement of old devices with modern ones, the moving of measuring locations and the delivery of assembly equipment has been put in charge of the consortium of Regiocom Germany, Sakspol Poland and Mezon from Danilovgrad, Montenegro, as part of the third phase.
The storage and further treatment of removed meters will be carried out by CEDIS in line with the regulations within the field of waste management. Since the beginning of the project, a total of 268,140 kilograms of waste has been given to CEDIS for treatment.
CEDIS said that, through the project, Montenegro would become the first country in which the EBRD operated that had met the requirements of the EU regarding the coverage with modern meters with a minimum of 80%.
It is expected that the emission of carbon-dioxide would be reduced by over 86,000 tons following the realization of the project.
