Alphabet Inc, Google's parent company, has set for itself another ambitious task – a new, more efficient way of preserving and storing energy than is provided by lithium-ion batteries.

A special organizational unit of the company which deals with ambitious, potentially impossible projects, has decided to look into the possibility of storing renewable energy by using salts and antifreeze.

The system they are planning to make, Bloomberg reports, should last longer than a lithium-ion battery.

In the first six months of the current year, California lost over 300,000 MWh of energy produced by solar panels and wind farms, as there is no good way to store it, Bloomberg writes. The amount is enough to power tens of thousands of homes.
