Operations of Australian Serbian Commerce Chamber made official – Potential for increased trade

A cocktail ceremony was held at the Embassy of Australia in Belgrade on Thursday, June 1, on the occasion of the initiation of the Australian Serbian Commerce Chamber (ASCC) in Serbia, for the purpose of introducing the local public to the mission, plans and the work performed by the chamber in both Australia and Serbia until then.

The ASCC is a non-profit economic organization founded by professionals of Serbian origin from various fields, to the end of supporting the development of bilateral trade and investments and identifying and presenting the trade potentials of the two countries.

– The ASCC is a member of the European-Australian Business Council, which is very active and influential in both Australia and the EU. Furthermore, cooperation has also been established with the Australian Trade and Investment Commission, AusTrade, whose European seat is in Warsaw – says the press release by the ASCC.

The projects carried out by the chamber in Australia so far include support to having items from the Nikola Tesla Museum displayed in Perth and Sydney, cooperation with Etihad Airways, a member of the chamber (in the field of tourism), as well as taking part in the Central European Forum at the Swinburne University in Melbourne.

The event at the Embassy was attended, among other guests, by representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Serbia, the Development Agency of Serbia, other foreign chambers of commerce, the media, investment funds, business associations, diplomatic corps, organizations such as Air Serbia, Rio Tinto, BioSense, Banca Intesa and a range of Australian companies in Serbia, as well as Serbian companies cooperating with the market of Australia.

Ambassador of Australia to Serbia Julia Feeney gave a speech, after which the activities carried out until then were presented, as well as the chamber's plans, and the guests were finally addressed by Dane Kondic, CEO of Air Serbia.


– Even though the current foreign trade between Serbia and Australia is relatively low and limited, there is potential for its development, and the chamber's efforts will therefore be focused on providing support in starting and implementing initiatives for bringing in and activating as many member-companies as possible, both in Serbia and Australia – the press release says.

Total trade in 2016 amounts to USD 15.6 million

The total trade between Serbia and Australia amounted to USD 15.6 million, a growth of 11.4% compared to 2015. The exports amounted to USD 9.7 million, whereas the imports reached USD 5.9 million. According to the data for the first three months of 2017, the total merchandise trade amounted to USD 3.3. million.

The leading exporting products in 2016 were: centrifugal pumps, ammunition and its components, cleaning and washing products, alcoholic drinks, sweet biscuits etc. The leading importing products were almonds, vegetable seeds, writing paper...
