In early 2017, the port area in Apatin was officially defined in line with the Strategy of Development of Water Transport of the Republic of Serbia from 2015 till 2025.
On that occasion, Apatin was visited on April 20 by the director of the Port Governance Agency, Vuk Perovic, the head of the Center for Port Activities, Srdjan Ljesevic, the director of the Free Zones Administration of Serbia, Milan Ristic, and the senior adviser of the Administration, Vidak Tomic. They talked with the president of the municipality of Apatin, Milan Skrbic, about defining further measures to be undertaken to the end of defining the port area in Apatin, so that an international tender for the future port operator might be opened as soon as possible.
As stated on the website of the municipality of Apatin, Milan Skrbic presented the projects which the local self-governments intended to use to solve the problem of the transportation infrastructure needed for the future Port of Apatin to function. He pointed out that corridor 7 (the Danube) was very important for Apatin. Skrbic also said that the municipality planned to involve the technical School in forming new courses for the needs of the future market.
Milan Ristic pointed out that the project in question was the first one in which the Port Governance Agency and the Free Zones Administration cooperated and that Apatin was a unique case in Serbia, as its position is such that there was no border between the Free Zone and the Port. Such a position, according to Ristic, is a huge potential for the municipality of Apatin, as well as for the Shipyard, also located in the Apatin Free Zone.
– The continuation of the project of revitalization of the railway infrastructure and the construction of storage facilities, which investors in the Free Zone, but also the future port operator, might find useful, is very important – Ristic added.
Vuk Perovic pointed out that the preparations for the tender were in progress and that its opening might be expected in 2017 or in the first half of 2018. Perovic added that, at the moment, the only obligation of the municipality of Apatin was to conduct basic preparations for the opening of the tender and the collection of letters of interest, so that the tender on the future concession and the selection of the operator would be as precise as possible.
