The scientists at Novi Sad's BioSense Institute won the first prize at this year's Syngenta Crop Challenge contest, held on April 3 in Las Vegas.

As reported by the institute, the soybean planting solution of the Serbian scientists for the US territory placed first in the competition of over 600 participants from all over the world, including teams from America, China, Europe, India... The BioSense solution is AI-based and provides agriculturists with recommendations as to which sorts to pick depending on the position of the parcel and weather conditions, in order to secure greater yields, while reducing risks. This complex solution also takes into account the location of seed vendors, allowing distributors to minimize their transportation costs and plan the sales.

– Very little separated all the finalist submissions—but there was excellent clarity in the logic of the BioSense team’s submission. They put a great deal of thought and contemplation into a very complex problem, and then solved it systematically – said Joseph Byrum, Ph.D., MBA, PMP, senior R&D strategic marketing executive with Syngenta and Syngenta lead for the Crop Challenge committee.

The winning team of the BioSense Institute consists of young scientists Oskar Marko, Dr Sanja Brdar and Marko Panic, students of the University of Novi Sad Isidora Sasis, Milivoje Knezevic and Danica Despotovic and the director of the BioSense Institute, Dr Vladimir Crnojevic.

Syngenta, a global leader in the sector of seeds and agricultural chemistry, organizes the contest presenting scientists with some of the biggest practical challenges each year. This year, the challenge pertained to the choice of seeds for planting, as one of the most important decisions agriculturists have to make each season. As no two seasons are the same, smart models based on information technologies and data have become necessary for decision making when it comes to planting, the press release adds.
