The national action plan for renewable energy sources of the Republic of Serbia envisions that 30 MW of new capacities for the production of electricity from biogas need to be built by 2020 in order to reach the goal of having 27% of electricity produced from RES, it was said at the Conference on the development and the impact of measures on the sustainable growth of the biogas sector in Serbia, held on March 1.

Minister of Mining and Energy Aleksandar Antic pointed out that the biggest competition in Serbia at the moment was in the field of the production of electricity from wind and that it will be in the focus of the development in the next period, along with the production of electricity from biomass. Antic emphasized that Serbia had potential to produce 5.6 tons of oil equivalent of electricity from RES, of which the potentials for the production from biomass had been estimated at around 3.3 million tons of oil equivalent, of which, in turn, around 1.5 million from wood biomass.

Assistant to the minister, Professor Milos Banjac, said that the ministry intended to enhance the utilization of renewable energy sources and that there were two types of activities to that end.

– One of them is related to using biomass to produce heating energy, and the other to combined production of heating and electrical energy. Last year's adoption of a group of regulations allowed us to stimulate the usage of biogas for the production of electrical energy and create an even stronger legal framework, that is, to provide greater security to investors interested in investing in this field. This has led to the construction of six new facilities for combined production of energy in Serbia – Banjac said.

He concluded that it was realistic to expect that Serbia would be producing 30 MW electricity from biogas by 2020, but that “this is still a negligible percentage, as the total installed power of Elektroprivreda Srbije is 6,300 MW”.
