The gas pipeline project South Stream might be brought back to life after the parliamentary election which is to take place in March in Bulgaria, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto stated today.

RIA Novosti reminds that Russia gave up on the planned pipeline, which was to go through Bulgaria, Serbia and Hungary, in December 2014 and opted for the Turkish Stream.

– I believe that it makes sense to wait for the election to be completed and see what the position of the new authorities is. However, it is not only in the interest of Hungary for the project to be revived, but in Bulgaria's and Serbia's interest as well – Szijjarto said.

The snap parliamentary election in Bulgaria takes place on March 26.

– It is in the interest of all the countries of the Balkans and Central Europe for the South Stream to be revived – Szijjarto said.

– If Russia and USA improve their relations in the future, the EU sanctions might be abolished – he added.

Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia in 2014 due to its alleged involvement in internal conflicts in Ukraine. US President Donald Tramp said several times during his campaign that relations with Moscow needed to be improved.

– Economically, it's clear that we are doing much greater damage to ourselves than to Russia. Whatever damage is being done to Russia with these sanctions is reflected on us as well. It's like shooting oneself in the foot – the Hungarian diplomat said.
