MIHAJLOVIC: 2017 is the final deadline for Corridor 10

The construction of Corridor 10, 600 of the most important kilometers of road through Serbia, will be officially completed in mid-2017

Minister Mihajlovic guarantees that the paperwork and the money have been prepared and secured, but that she is still bothered by the fact that the job wasn’t finished much earlier. Her predecessor Milutin Mrkonjic says that projects of that size are built throughout several mandates.

The story of Corridor 10, as a transit to the EU, was initiated 34 years ago. The first loans were taken out in mid-1990s, and the highway has been built for a decade and a half now. The most important infrastructural project in the country, as the current minister of transport has called it, will be finalized in a few months.

– According to our estimates, only 27 kilometers of the most difficult sections remain. I won’t specify the date, but 2017 is the final deadline for Corridor 10 – says Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic.

A man and a woman have left the greatest mark on the pavement of Corridor 10. Engineer Mrkonjic can’t tell how many sections are his, but knows that he was 330 km short of the goal in 2008. He says, “we prepared the preliminary and the main design, paid EUR 100 million for the expropriation of the land, secured the money for the contractors and started doing the job”.

– I truly believed that it would end earlier, but, I emphasize, the preparation takes half as much time as the construction does – Milutin Mrkonjic says.

The former and the current minister now agree on the fact that the construction of Corridor 10 is nearing the end and nothing can stop it.
