Old Sava bridge in Belgrade open for traffic
The Old Sava bridge has been opened this morning for railway traffic after its reconstruction that lasted for more than five months.
In addition to new traffic signalization, the bridge, which was opened for passenger vehicles and buses last night, also got new fence and the top quality asphalt on the lane, as well as decorative lighting.
The first to go across the bridge in a tram this morning were Serbian minister Dragan Đilas, city manager Bojan Stanojević and representatives of city authorities and public companies.
- The Sava bridge will prevent traffic jams in the city, but it is necessary to have a bridge across Ada Ciganlija built, the tender procedure for which is finished, and that Belgrade gets the first subway line - said Đilas, who is in charge of realization of the National Investment Plan.
Acting Mayor of Belgrade, Zoran Alimpić, pointed out that the opening of the Sava bridge for traffic would increase traffic flow because daily capacity of the bridge was up to 30,000 vehicles.
He added that the reconstruction of that bridge, which commenced on October 13, 2007, would contribute to easier flow of traffic in Belgrade.
About 824m RSD, provided by the City Assembly, was spent on the overhaul of the bridge and the deadline for completion of the works was breached several times. Part of the funds was set aside from the loan approved by the European Investment Bank. Most Important News
