A total of EUR 28 m for Novi Sad project Antares - BioSens institute to become European center of excellence

The Antares project of the Novi Sad-based Institute BioSens, won the first award in Europe within the invitation of the European Commission "Horizon 2020 - Timing" intended for creation of European centers of excellence in scientific research.According to the statement of BioSens, the objective of the Antares project is to develop the institute into the European center of excellence for advanced technology in the field of sustainable agriculture.The project aims to develop, through synergy of IT sector and agriculture, agriculture as the most important segment of the domestic industry, performs transfer of innovations from research into economy, thus accelerating country’s economic development.With the opening of around 150 new jobs in science the best young experts in the country will be retained and the best researchers from abroad will be attracted, and through a special program of support for small and medium enterprises to connect local IT sector and agriculture, Antares will promote Serbia as a central point of research and innovation in the entire region, it was announced in the statement.Antares has a budget of EUR 28 m, of which EUR 14 m represent the EU grant, and another EUR 14 m is national co-financing which has already been provided by the Government of Serbia.The project won first place in the competition of nearly 200 projects from all over Europe, where the strongest European scientific research institutions, such as the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the Max Planck and Fraunhoffer institute participated.
