The first space state, Asgardia, is less than a month old, and its Serbian diaspora already has nearly 1,000 members.

Dr Igor Ashurbeyli, Russian scientist and space expert, announced the establishment of the first space nation on October 12 in Paris. Asgardia has already received half a million citizenship applications, with 954 having come from Serbia so far, placing us in the 57th place of 233 countries from which requests have been sent, Blic writes.

Most requests have come from China (140,000), followed by America (55,000) and Turkey (44,000). The scientist plans to finance launching the first satellite representing the state's territory, which will be uninhabited initially.

Asgardians are currently choosing the state flag and hymn, and the registering of new citizens has been halted due to the small state apparatus' being overloaded.

– The essence of Asgardia is peace in space and the prevention of Earth's conflicts being transferred into space. Asgardia is also unique from a philosophical aspect – to serve the entire humanity and each and everyone, regardless of his or her personal welfare and the prosperity of the country where they happen to have been born – Ashurbeyli explained.

He also announced that the new nation, which already had a government with 11 ministries, planed to ask to be admitted to the United Nations. The manifesto of the first alien nation says that laws pertaining to space exclusively mustn't turn into jungle laws and that space resources need to be protected, as they belong to each one of us.

The name of the state and the nation originates in Nordic mythology, with Asgard being a home to gods.

Ahurbeyli was born in Baku, Azerbaijan. Following his graduation from the state academy, he moved to Moscow. He has won the UNESCO medal for contribution to the development of nanoscience and nanotechnologies. He has founded the Aerospace International Research Center in Vienna, which produces systems and tools used in high technology companies.
