Government of Serbia passed regulation that allows import of about 200,000 tons of mercantile wheat
- Government of Serbia passed the Regulation yesterday (March 13, 2008) on emergency import of about 200,000 tons of mercantile wheat in order to prevent further growth of prices of flour and bread on Serbian market - said the Minister of Trade and Service, Predrag Bubalo.
At the press conference following the meeting of the Government,
Bubalo said that half of the quantity would be intended for stock supplies, so that the consequences of potentially poor harvest in 2008 and 2009 could be alleviated.
Bubalo estimated that the price of wheat on Serbian market had reached record level, but that it would not be easy to procure wheat in the surrounding countries or on other markets, because the price was relatively high.
According to his estimate, following the announcements of emergency import of wheat, manufacturers and vendors in Serbia reacted and the price of wheat started to stagnate.
