Stećci inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Site
The nomination file Stećci – Medieval Tombstones was prepared by experts from four countries – Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia – as part of the international project of the serial nomination of thirty necropolises.
Within the Cultural Heritage – A Bridge Towards a Shared Future project, carried out by the Venice-based UNESCO Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, the project of the Joint Nomination for Inclusion of Stećci was initiated in November 2009.
In Sarajevo in April 2010, the participants from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro and Serbia were made official, as was the plan of activities. This marked the beginning of the first international project in the domain of culture in the Balkans in the 21st century.
The List features 28 medieval tombstone sites (20 in Bosnia and Herzegovina, two in Croatia, three in Montenegro and three in Serbia).
The necropolises in Serbia are located in the territories of the municipalities of Bajina Basta and Prijepolje, namely, the archaeological site Mramorje Perucac and Mramorje Rastiste (Bajina Basta) and Grcko Groblje (“Greek cemetery”) in the village of Hrta, Prijepolje.
