Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic stated yesterday that the Government of Serbia had invested EUR 4.5 million in the development of the Nis Airport up till then, and that the plan was to invest another EUR 6.5 million before 2019.

During her visit to the Nis Constantine the Great Airport, she also said that she had fulfilled her promise, made two years before, regarding the development of the airport.

– There were more than 30,000 passengers last year, this year there will be over 100,000, and 200,000 passengers are expected in 2017 – Mihajlovic said.

She added that they had partnered up with the City of Nis in order to make the Nis Airport as commercial as possible and to make it an important Western Balkans destination.

The mayor of Nis, Darko Bulatovic, said that the long-term plan for the development of the airport would be revealed shortly, and that the Government of Serbia and the relevant ministry would support the short-term plans in order for them to be implemented as soon as possible.

The construction of the tower is planned to start next year. Also planned is the installation of the system which is supposed to enable flying under conditions of reduced visibility and the installation of new lighting. Furthermore, the reception building will be reconstructed, as will be the terminal, so that it would be able to take two airplanes at once, and the procurement of new equipment, providing a greater level of safety, is also planned, Bulatovic said.

He reminded that the Nis Airport would introduce three new destinations within 20 days.
