The Beekeeping Association of Serbia will start building its own honey packing facility in the municipality or the city which offers the greatest help in the construction, stated the president of the Association, Rodoljub Zivanovic.

He said that the Association has invited local self-governments to say how they can help build the honey factory, through infrastructure or finance. – The facility will be built by our own means, which is why it will be built in stages, along with the inflow of the assets – Zivanovic said.

According to him, beekeepers intend to build their own factory for packing and marketing honey in order to avoid any sort of manipulation in the future. This year, certain purchasers paid only EUR 1.5 per kg for sunflower honey, although the real price was EUR 2.1, Zivanovic said.

He pointed out that beekeepers were forced to sell honey at such a low price as the year had been very bad, and they needed money in order to maintain the production and prepare the bees for the winter.

Zivanovic said that the weather conditions hadn't been favorable for beekeepers. There was practically no acacia honey, and yields from sunflowers were halved. Apiaries of the members of the Association, Zivanovic reminded, produced around 7,000 tons of honey in 2015.
