Minister of Finance Dusan Vujovic stated on Friday that pensions and salaries in the public sector might be raised as soon as the next year and pointed out that the state had a surplus of RSD 40 billion at the moment and that there was no need to amend the budget.

– The prime minister has promised that raises will be considered and that the results will influence our proposal. We have made fantastic results and we will have a basis to talk about the issue legitimately at the end of the third quarter, and how big they will be and in which sectors depends on the numbers and the dialogues in the period ahead, in October or November – Vujovic said.

He said for RTS that “at the end of this year or in the next year’s budget, we will know exactly what changes will be made and to what extent the citizens will be able to feel the improvements which have already been made in the fiscal area”.

Vujovic emphasized that a surplus of RSD 22 billion had been made in July and that a deficit of RSD 83 billion had been planned, so the state’s results had been better by RSD 95 billion than planned.

– This is a huge sum – EUR 800 million better than planned – Vujovic said and added that the result had been made thanks to an improved income and expenditure ratio and better one-off results in short-term income.

– There was an additional surplus of RSD 20 billion in August, so the total surplus is RSD 40 billion, which makes up 1% of GDP, instead of the planned deficit of 2.5-4% - the minister said.

He emphasized that the state didn’t need to amend the budget, since its performance was very good, but that it was possible that it would do so nevertheless in order to verify the success and enable a more efficient usage of resources and savings it had made.
