Old Nis landfill issue to be solved after 50 years – Construction of water treatment facility planned
The project documentation for the construction of a seepage water treatment facility, the completion of the existing perimeter canals and the construction of new canals, which has been prepared by Hidrozavod, has recently been presented to the City of Nis, whose approval for the calling of the tender for the contractor is now being expected.
– After 50 years, the Nis landfill will stop being an environmental hazard. The landfill has been fully recovered, and the realization of the project of the construction of a waste water treatment facility and canals which will solve the problem of landfill waters, which seep through and pollute the underground waters, should start soon. This way, the long-lasting problem of potable water in households in Belotinac and another three neighboring villages in the municipality of Doljevac will also be solved – pointed out the director of PUE Mediana, Bratislav Vuckovic.
In Mediana they explain that this will be the biggest environmental investment in the last five years. According to the project, all the works should be completed by spring 2018.
– If the weather conditions are favorable, the works on the old Nis landfill might be completed by the end of 2017 construction season – explains assistant Nebojsa Jordanov from PUE Mediana.
The project will cost the City of Nis from EUR 750,000 to 1 million, and the money has been procured through waste disposal fees, which were introduced in Nis three years ago.
