Allotment of licenses for "WiMax" in Serbia

Public discussion about rule books that will define terms of the open competition for license WiMax for wireless Internet, which enables transfer of fixed phone signal, will soon be organized in Serbia, Ministry of Telecommunications and IT Society announced yesterday (January 30, 2008).

According to the announcement, Republic Telecommunications Agency (RATEL) will carry out public auction procedure and issue appropriate licenses after the final text is finished and published in "Official Bulletin".

According to the draft rule book, license will be issued to three operators in every region, except in Belgrade where only one license will be issued because major part of the band was assigned earlier.

WiMax technology is characterized by smaller investments and cheap licenses that suit smaller companies all around Serbia.

The Ministry is of the opinion that the application of Internet in Serbia will be accelerated in that way, which is very important for development of our economy and society as a whole. That technology will also accelerate and simplify telephone services for all citizens.
