Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) and General Electric Power (GE Power) signed, on Friday, July 22, a contract on the procurement of a turbine for the block A4 of the Thermal Power Plant Nikola Tesla (TENT) in Obrenovac, which will allow for significant savings to be made.

The acting director of EPS, Milorad Grcic, pointed out that the block A4 had by then worked for over 250,000 hours, and that the new turbine would increase the power by 24 MW. The financial saving through reduced usage of coal and increased efficiency will amount to EUR 6 million.

Grcic said that EPS had for the first time applied a new principle in deliberating between two offers, and that, thanks to General Electric’s understanding and their long cooperation with EPS, a price lower by EUR 3 million than the one in 2014 for the same type of procurement had been agreed. The total value of the agreement amounts to EUR 19.9 million.

He is convinced that EPS would continue with the process of modernization and revitalization with the goal of increasing stability in power supply in accordance to the guidelines given by the Government of Serbia, in order for EPS to become more modern and efficient.

The acting director for power production at EPS, Savo Bezmarevic, reminded that the black A4 at TENT had started working on June 8, 1978, and that it had 256,000 hours behind it.

– Through the revitalization which will be carried out in 2017, the most important part of which is the installment of a new turbine, we will have extended the plant’s life by another life cycle. We will also create the prerequisites for increasing the power from 308 to 333 megawatts – Bezmarevic explained and added that that would extend the overhaul period from five to ten years, and that the turbine would enable the block to operate in the district heating mode as well.

Following the revitalization, the power plant in Obrenovac will have an additional 120 MW of capacity.

The sales manager of General Electric for Central Europe, Stefan Turnher, pointed out the importance of the project, not just to EPS, but to Serbia, and emphasized that the factory which produced that kind of equipment had the biggest experience in that area and over 1,000 projects realized around the world.

According to him, the turbine will, to a large extent, contribute to sustainable power supply in Serbia, and a more efficient turbine will require less coal to be used, which will in turn lead to the reduction on the emission of harmful gases. This will allow EPS, as Turnher reasons, to not only improve its operation, but also to contribute to environmental protection to a considerable extent.
