The state can't influence the purchase price of wheat, which is freely formed in the market, but it can help farmers through increased inspection controls, said Minister of Agriculture and Environmental Protection Snezana Bogosavljevic Boskovic.

The minister said after the meeting with farmers in Belgrade that they would be enabled to rent public storage space to store wheat, so that they can wait for the purchase price to become acceptable for them.

According to her, it was estimated at the meeting that the current purchase price of wheat was insufficient for producers, but that it was nothing new compered to the previous years, since the price was always at its lowest at the time of purchase.

– This year is specific because of its large and record yields in both Serbia and the neighboring countries – the minister said and announced that in the next 30 days a regulation book would be published, dealing with the quality of wheat, flour and confectionery products, which should contribute to more favorable market prices for those who produced wheat of a higher quality.

Minister of Trade Rasim Ljajic said that one of farmers' complaints was that they were being shortchanged in paying VAT and announced the intensification of both the inspection and tax and financial control with a view to making the market game fair and regulated.

He pointed out that everyone should be satisfied with the 2016 wheat crop, as 1.5 million tons would remain for the export.
