Cameras will soon be installed along the Belgrade-Nis highway in order to increase transportation safety, stated the acting director of Putevi Srbije Zoran Drobnjak on Thursday, June 9, and added that in the first four months of 2016, the number of vehicles on highways had increased by 11%.

- We are planning to cover the entire highway from Belgrade to Nis with cameras, if not this year, then next year – said Drobnjak to the press at the 2nd Serbian Road Congress.

He stated that the cameras would prove especially useful during summer, when the traffic intensifies, but also in winter, since the cameras would enable better monitoring of the highway.

- Each year we are experiencing an increase in traffic due to Serbia’s location between South-Eastern Europe and North-Western Europe. Last year there were around 2.5 million vehicles more than in 2014 – pointed out Drobnjak.

He emphasized that the transit traffic didn’t go across Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary, but across Serbia instead.

Putevi Srbije manages around 15,000 km of roads and around 3,000 bridges and 80 tunnels, and around EUR 100 million out of the EUR 200 million annual budget of the enterprise is spent on road maintenance, which is not enough, explained Drobnjak and mentioned that the rest of the money was spent on road construction, bridge and tunnel reconstruction, landslide amelioration, planning, land expropriation and other purposes.

Drobnjak said that the new highway would soon get the Presevo toll booth and that two more toll booths, Takovo and Preljina, needed to be finished at the Corridor 11 before August 15 or 20, since the Ljig-Preljina would open to traffic on August 25.
