The European Commission has adopted a set of pre-accession assistance programs for the year 2016, worth a total of approximately one billion euro, to support reforms and regional cooperation in countries aspiring towards a membership in the EU.
- This set of programs show our strong committment to the European future of the Western Balkans and Turkey. This is a long-term investment in stability, security and prosperity of the European Union which will back political and economic reforms in all the countries that are on the path to joining the EU - said Commissioner for European Neighboring Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

As the EU Delegation to Podgorica announced, funds are provided under the Instrument of Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA II) and will be made available to Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Turkey.

These funds will support further implementation of democratic and economic reforms, modernization of judicial system and government administration, as well as regional cooperation.

This set includes a EUR 155 million program for support to the financing of large regional infrastructure projects in the Western Balkans: four merger projects in the area of electrical energy and two road traffic and two railway traffic projects which should bring the economies and societies in the region closer to each other. This contribution by the EU is expected to enable the borrowing of a total of EUR 540 million from partner financial institutions.
