Metalfer rolling mill takes over a part of Sirmium steel smelter

Sremska Mitrovica-based Metalfer, restarted a part of production in smelter Sirmium steel and took over seventy employees from smelter. Sirmium steel in export size ranked 11th in Serbia and now account of smelter has been blocked, two facilities in Sremska Mitrovica and another one in Ruma have been mortgaged by commercial banks, majority of heads resigned, Italian owner has not shown up for months so these days bankruptcy is expected.

Since halt of smelter operations resulted in matters of survival of smelter with 216 employees, Metalfer took over 70 out of 190 employees and rehabilitated a part of production of steel billets which are the basic raw material for the rolling mill operations.

Owner of Metalfer, Branko Zecevic, said at the press conference held in smelter that as for now, smelter will operate only for the needs of rolling mill.
