Contactless payments in restaurants - McDonalds launches Visa payWave technology

Visa, McDonald’s and AIK Bank teamed to bring consumers even easier and faster way to pay for their orders, with the implementation of Visa payWave contactless technology in McDonald’s restaurants across Serbia. Visa, McDonald’s and AIK Bank showcased contactless technology, including NFC payments with a smartphone at McDonald's restaurant Fountain in Belgrade on September 11, 2015.

To enable Visa payWave contactless payments AIK Bank, an acquiring partner of the project, installed modern contactless point-of-sale (POS) terminals at 15 restaurants of the chain, including McDrive.

Full integration of cashier register and POS terminal enables self-service for consumers.

Namely, a cardholder independently operates POS terminal: wave/swipe a payment card and remove the card upon transaction completion. Visa payWave contactless technology allows customers to simply ‘wave and go”, as they only need to bring the card closer to the contactless reader on the POS terminal without passing it over to the cashier. Moreover, for payments under RSD 2000 no PIN or signature is required, which makes the payment process even faster.

Visa payWave contactless technology can also be used on mobile phones that support contactless payments via NFC (Near-Field-Communication). The mobile phone payments can be made with the same terminals accepting contactless cards in McDonald’s restaurants.

Vladimir Djordjevic, Visa regional manager for South East Europe said: “At the moment Serbia is the 3rd market in CEMEA region on Visa payWave volumes and contactless issuing and acquiring is crucial for further growth of electronic payments as it is increasingly replacing the use of cash.

- We hope that with Visa payWave launch at McDonalds, one of Visa’s key partner merchants, more customers will be able to enjoy fast, secure and convenient payments thus helping us to strengthen Serbia leadership position in adopting innovative payment solutions.

- Contactless payment implementation enabled our employees in 15 McDonald’s restaurants across Serbia to serve guests more effective. The feedback we’re receiving from McDonalds guests is positive, because with Visa payWave cards they need only a few seconds to complete a payment - said Desanka Landauer, Marketing Director, McDonald’s Serbia.

- In line with AIK Bank’s strategic goal to become a leader in banking innovations and provide new technologies to our clients, we pay great attention to improving the customer service, thus contactless payments are especially important. Long-term partnership that AIK Bank has with both Visa and McDonald's companies strengthened our decision to participate in the implementation of Visa payWave contactless technology in McDonald's restaurants, which is a logical move on the road to better customer service - said Srdjan Savic, Head of direct channels, AIK Bank.
