City Manager Goran Vesic announced Thursday that the pedestrian zone in Belgrade would be expanded and that a request for proposals from potential contractors for the reconstruction of Oslobodjenja Boulevard and Slavija Square would be issued by April 1st.

In his guest appearance on Beogradska Hronika on RTS1 TV, Vesic said that Slavija Square and Oslobodjenja Boulevard reconstruction works could then commence in the second half of the year.

As he noted, the Slavija Square reconstruction project will be different from the original version shown to the public because some remarks made by expert organizations and citizens during the public discussion have been accepted.

He, however, could not specify what exactly will be changed because, as he stressed, these remarks must first be adopted by the Planning Commission.

- We expect the reconstruction of Vojvode Stepe Street to be finished on July 11 and followed by the reconstruction of Oslobodjenja Boulevard and Slavija Square - said Vesic.

As he announced, pedestrian zone is expected to be expanded, and the plan is to turn the entire area between Zeleni Venac neighborhood, Pariska Street and Tadeusa Koscuska Street, Republic Square and Brace Jugovica Street into a zone for pedestrians in four years.

- With the new Republic Square, new Terazije and the new square that will be located between the Parliament of Serbia, City Assembly and Presidency Building, it will be a true city center that Belgrade should have had a long time ago - Vesic stressed.

Announcing the reconstruction of Knez Mihailova Street, the city manager voiced his belief that in few years, we will be able to say proudly that Belgrade has a city center that one of the most beautiful European capitals really deserves.
