Activity description
Since its foundation in 1886 till the first years after World War II and country liberation, the Academy was divided into four "orders" or four "professional academies". Those were: The Academy of Natural Sciences, The Academy of Philosophical Sciences, The Academy of Social Sciences and The Academy of Art. Under new social circumstances and in accordance with the diversified scientific and cultural needs the Academy was reorganized in 1947 by the Law on the Serbian Academy of Sciences of June 30, 1947.

The professional academies were abandoned and departments were founded as the basic scientific and cultural units of the Academy. Departments included one or more fields of sciences or arts.

At first there were six of them:
1. Department of Natural and Mathematical Sciences,
2. Department of Technical Sciences,
3. Department of Medical Sciences,
4. Department of Literature and Language,
5. Department of Social Sciences, and
6. Department of Fine Arts and Music.

Such a structure of the Academy remained unchanged until 1971, except that the Department of Literature and Language changed its name into the Department of Language and Literature by the Law on SASA of December 28, 1968, i.e. by the SASA Statutes of December 25, 1968 adopted on the basis of the above mentioned Law.

The Assembly of the SASA decided on March 11, 1971 that the Department of Social Sciences should be divided into the Department od Social Sciences and the Department of Historical Sciences and on May 28, 1998 that the Department of Mathematical and Natural Sciences should be divided into the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Geo Sciences and the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences.
