There's still a lot we don't understand about anxiety and mental illnesses, but almost all scientists agree that most of them develop through a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

A study carried out at the University of Wisconsin warns that anxiety can run in families.

The scientists have been researching anxiety within families for a long time, believing that it is transferred when a child observes a nervous parent, adopting the behavior in the process.

However, tracing a pattern of brain activity linked to anxiety through generations of monkeys, the researchers found that there was a genetic factor as well. Since these are primates similar to humans, the scientists believe that the results of the study are applicable to people as well.

Analyses have shown certain similarities in the brain structures in families of monkeys with pronounced anxiety have, with the brain of an anxious parent and their anxious child being similar in the part responsible for fear.

The researcher believe that detecting anxiety early on is very important, as children who exhibit the first symptoms at a very early age are quite likely to develop depression or anxiety later in life. Excessive shyness and fear accompanied by nausea when going to school are some of the alarming signs.
