Singapore Airlines to relaunch world's longest flight
The service is to be relaunched on October 11, connecting the two cities, which are 10,300 miles apart, with an 18-hour-45-minute flight.
It's interesting to note that the route will be serviced by an Airbus A350-900ULR with only two travel classes – a business class with 67 seats and a premium class with 94 seats. The planes will fly every day from the Singapore Airport (SIN) to the Newark Airport (EWR) in New Jersey.
Singapore Airlines currently connects two two destination with flights carried out by an Airbus A380, with stopovers in Frankfurt. The previous direct service was maintained until 2013 with an Airbus A340-500, but was too expensive for the company.
Due to the length, the plane had special reservoirs for extra fuel, which had an impact on its load carrying capacities, causing the passenger capacity to lower. It could only transport 100 passengers in a single flight, which wasn't very cost-effective for the company.
With the new technology and the new model A350-900ULR (Ultra Long Range), which will be introduced to the commercial transport for the first time on this route, Singapore Airlines expects the endeavor to be successful. The company expects the first airplane of this type to arrive in September, and they've ordered a total of seven planes, which should arrive by the end of the year. The first next destination for the new model is expected to be Los Angeles.
