Most attractive languages in the world
This is bad news for Serbs and other nations in the region, since only Russian has found a place on the list, of all Slavic languages, and then only in the eighth spot.
As expected, French, often called the language of love, placed first, whereas the second spot belongs to Italian.
The Spanish language placed third, whereas the fourth spot went to English.
Many are surprised to learn that German is fifth on the list of the sexiest languages.
The full list of the most attractive languages in the world looks like this:
1. French
2. Italian
3. Spanish
4. English
5. German
6. Portuguese
7. Swedish
8. Russian
9. Dutch
10. Turkish
A total of 15,000 people from Brazil, Spain, Italy, France, Germany, Great Britain, USA, Canada and Australia took part in the survey, Index reports.
The Guardian writes that there are several reasons why certain languages are more attractive than others.
Dr Patti Adank, a lecturer on speech, hearing and phonetic sciences at University College London (UCL), believes that English speakers are drawn to the melody of a language such as French or Italian.
– In comparison, languages such as Thai or Mandarin can sound harsh because they are using tonal distinctions. It sounds very unnatural and unexpected – Adank believes.
Languages that have different linguistic structures, such as using tones or sounds that are not found in a listener's native tongue, are probably going to sound less enticing.
Another reason is slightly more unusual. Certain linguists believe that, in rating a language, survey subject do not rate the sounds themselves, but the person making them.
According to this theory, those who voted French in the survey do not see the language itself as sexy, but the people.
