Large number of old vehicles in Serbia are still using leaded gasoline and low-quality motor fuels (e.g. diesel fuel with high percentage of sulfur). However, the situation is about to change soon because, according to the National Environment Protection Program of the republic of Serbia, the Technical regulations governing the emission of polluting matters from mobile sources of pollution are planned to be put in effect prior to end of 2011, while the Technical regulations governing the limit values of polluting matters in liquid fuels should be adopted prior to end of 2012, which will make such fuels unprofitable.
