The plan that an international border crossing to Romania be opened near Jaša Tomić, a village in the municipality of Sečanj, will be fulfilled soon. The Mayor of Sečanj, Predrag Milošević, confirmed to the press that both countries had given their consents and added that the border crossing would be financed by the international community. The consents were previously given by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Finance of Serbia.
- Preparations for this project last for some time now and I must admit that Romanian side was more agile. Since the new border crossing will be opened on the shortest route from Timisoara to Novi Sad, Romanians have already built their part of the junction. They lobbied for the money and obtained it from European funds – said Milošević.
By the way, construction of few kilometers of road on our side is financed from the Vojvodina's Capital Investments Fund.
People in Sečanj's local self-government believe that re-categorization of the border crossing in Jaša Tomić from occasional to permanent will contribute to significant economic development of this poor community.
Milošević also spoke earlier that, thanks to the border crossing, the budget incomes would be increased by about 5 per cents. It will also be a good thing for Vojvodina because the international airport in Timisoara is about 40 km away from the border. Kopar-based Cimos, which bought forge Fam in Sečanj and an unit in Jaša
Tomić, is especially interested in opening of aforementioned border crossing because Rešice, an aluminum ore deposit, is situated about 70 km away from Jaša Tomić. The company that manufactures castings for the world's leading automotive companies is particularly interested in this raw material.
- It is a significant thing for the economy of the municipality of Sečanj.
It is also good for our manpower since people from around here will be hired to do some jobs in Romania where bricklayers and agricultural experts are in high demand. We hope that Sečanj, as a municipality in the border area, will quickly enter Europe in this way – said Milošević.
