The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) decided to expand the World Cup to include 48 teams starting with 2026. As reported by the world's biggest football organization, the new championship format involves 16 groups with three teams each.

Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, is the main advocate of the idea, despite numerous protests by the biggest clubs. He has, however, received support from the large majority of national associations.

The decision was made unanimously at the FIFA meeting. After the World Cups in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, the championship will feature a record number of 48 teams.

It is not yet known where the 2026 World Cup will take place.
